Barry Bonds' record ball auctioned for $752,467 美國職棒巨砲邦茲破紀錄的全壘打球以逾75萬美元拍出

Barry Bond's record-breaking home run ball was auctioned for more than $750,000, well above what sports memorabilia experts had expected the ball to fetch, the auctioneer said on Saturday.

An unidentified bidder paid $752,467.20 in an online auction run by SCP Auctions Inc, which sells sports' collectibles' in partnership with Sotheby's, according to SCP.

Bonds hit his 756th homer, beating Hank Aaron's major league baseball record, in the San Francisco Giants's game against the Washington Nationals on August 7.

The record has been shadowed in controversy over whether Bonds, 43, may have used steroids in his late 30s to extend his slugging powers, an age at which many players start to slow down.

A number of sports memorabilia auction houses had said the record-beating ball might have a value of up to $500,000. The opening bid on August 28 was $100,000. There were 31 bids.

Matt Murphy, a 22-year-old tourist visiting from New York, was submerged by other fans after he grabbed the ball in the San Francisco stands last month. He was helped away by police officers. Murphy put the ball up for auction through SCP.

Bidding, which had languished under $300,000 for most of the auction accelerated only in the final hours.

The final figure is well above the $450,000 another ball fetched at auction that Bonds hit to set the single-season record of 73 home runs in October 2001.

A parallel auction for the ball with which Bonds hit home run 755, tying Aaron's hitting record, closed on Saturday with a winning bid of $186,750, according to SCP. Adam Hughes, a 33-year-old from La Jolla, California had caught that ball.
